Lady Helen Shelton, a native of Chicago Illinois is the eldest of 4 siblings. She grew up in Cabrini Green Projects. Her parents were church goers, so this was a key part of her foundation. During her High School years she had her first child. Helen continued her education and graduated from Cooley High Upper Grade Center. She went on to a junior college, and obtained a certificate in bookkeeping, economics and accounting.
Entering the workforce Helen gained, most of her initial work experience through on the job training. She then married and had 3 more beautiful children. When this marriage ended, she and her children relocated to Memphis Tennessee. There she joined her parents who had moved back from Chicago. With a new start, she continued her education and career plans, by obtaining her certification as a nurses assistant. After receiving her certification she began working in a nursing home and years later she was hired at the VA Medical Center.
After establishing herself in the Memphis area, Helen accepted an invitation to visit a church. Breakthrough C.O.G.B.F. under the leadership of Pastor Alfonso Boone. This was where she got saved. Helen then began to serve as the church's bookkeeper and Pastor Boone’s secretary. She also served in the church choir and sang with a group called “Anointed Worship.” It is in Memphis, where she met Garry Shelton. A year later they were married. They are parents of a blended family, 6 children (1 deceased) 21 grands and about 13 great grands.
While at Breakthrough C.O.G.B.F. they served faithfully together. There they learned together what God had in store for their future. She and now Pastor Shelton, were sent to Texas by Bishop James McKnight Sr. to start a ministry. Spirit of Life C.O.G.B.F.’s first service was June of 2006.
Lady Shelton, alongside her husband, helped create a ministry of love that seeks to serve. Spirit of Life has served the community through food pantries, clothing & household giveaways and free school supplies to families in need. Her heart has always been towards women and children. In 2009 the desire of her heart was to have a gathering where women could come and be saved, healed, and delivered in Christ Jesus. The first “Sista 2 Sista” gathering took place.
Lady Shelton's leadership has helped to build up women from all walks of life, she gives God the glory for all the lives changed. Loving people, long-suffering with others, sharing the gospel and her life's testimony, is who she is. Lady Shelton has retired from the workforce, but not from Kingdom work. She continues to lead the Women of Excellence Ministry, serve on the financial board, and sing with the praise and worship team at Spirit of Life C.O.G.B.F.
